E4od slipping in reverse

97 4x4 auto slips in reverse. All forward gears are fine. If you try to back up in reverse it barely moves if on an incline. If you put the transfer case in low it helps. What could be causing this?

1997 cc lb 4x4 5 speed tymar 4 inch diamond eye straight pipe, 20 inch Eagle Alloy polished wheels,power hungry 6 pos tuned for stage 1's,idm mod,8000k H.I.D's. 4'' icon front super duty springs with sky 5'' rsk. rear 6'' icons for super duty. bilstien shocks. ebay special grill.

How much of an ordeal is it to change that out?

Plan on a full rebuild if u are going that far in maybe some upgrades while in there.

Pull the trans out and rebuild it or replace it.

I have been reading up and seeing a few things talking about checking the pressure. How is the pressure checked?
