Help with a 97 f250 7.3

Hey guys, srry very new to this forum stuff. I bought a 97 f250 7.3 ext cab from my work. It was my fathers work truck for many yrs, and has a ton of sentimental value to me. My father passed away in 2013. Truck has sat in a field for the last couple yrs. Upon getting it home i found out people had been removing parts from it. Fuel filter housing, solenoid on the fender, glow plug relay, and oil pressure switch to name a few. Wondering what all i need to check and go over, while gathering all the parts i need to get her back running better than ever. Any info is greatly appreciated. I am very mechanically inclined, but new to diesels. Thank you

Re: Help with a 97 f250 7.3

I'd put back what the thieves took off, check or change the oil and filter, check or change the fuel filter, check or change the air filter and the associated hardware to assure nothing will be drawn into the engine when it is started, and get a couple of decent batteries. If you can, it would be good to check the fuel tanks for signs of algae or water. Fresh fuel is best.

Don't use starting fluid. The glow plugs have a habit of making it go BOOM with such stuff!

Is there an easy way to drain the tank without pulling it?

Hook an electric fuel pump to the pick up tube line and let it do its thing while you just watch it.
