Help! Chance to buy this 97 f250 7.3 4x4

Yes, I'm new to this forum so I hope this doesn't rub anyone the wrong way, but hopefully i'll find a truck soon and i'll be here to stay :)

Here it goes:

I live in the Southwest and I have a chance to buy this 1997 f250 4x4 with the 7.3 motor. it has 190K original miles... I currently drive a little Tacoma, but I have been wanting an older bullet proof diesel to tow a 6k lb boat/trailer. I am hoping this is the one! The guy is asking 12,000 but I am thinking he may negotiate a bit... I know this is over blue book, but I also know there is a market for these trucks since I have been looking for about a month. Just saw a 97 f350 crew cab 7.3 4x4 go for 15k a couple days ago with 170k miles...

Am I crazy for thinking about paying that much for a truck like this? Or is that in line with the going market?

Re: Help! Chance to buy this 97 f250 7.3 4x4

it looks to be all original? Does it have any aftermarket modifications? Any rust?

The 7.3 trucks are going up in value and they are getting harder to find with lower miles.
That seems like alot of $$$$ to some of us but that all depends on your local market (basically craigslist is the local market these days)
If it is clean and runs like new then you may be happy to pay that much

Just know a 97 7.3 is a towing SOB but it does not handle the road like the newer diesels, or a superduty (99+)
However it can be made to!
Also it is not intercooled and has smaller turbo and smaller injectors.
With some upgrades it can keep up with the newer trucks
When I first got rid of my V10 superduty and stepped into a 97 7.3 F350 I was thinking I made a big mistake.
It did not tow well, did not have the power I wanted and did not hold the road.
My 97 was completely worn out.
Now I would not trade it for the world, but it took alot of work and some $$$$ to get it the way she is now.
Now she will haul anything and handles the road just fine....very comfortable truck.
I would not trade my 97 for the world, in 3 years or so I am very happy with my 97, I use it as a shop truck and do alot of hauling.
I paid $3000 for mine then put about $15K into it and alot of blood sweat and tears.
Your 97 looks much nicer to start with, but I suggest you drive it around a bit so you know what you are getting into

The OBS trucks need some love, that is all

Re: Help! Chance to buy this 97 f250 7.3 4x4

it looks clean and low mile diesel get pretty steep. if he can verify the low miles thats probably close to market value. I bougnt my 96 supercab 2wd 7.3 e4od for $1200 , but I didn't even hear it run and it had 368,000 miles on it. I had a young guy offer me 5,000 already for it because it has almost no rust. but I spent lots of tiem changing the engine wiring harness and replacing fuel lines. if I had paid a shop to do the work I would have doubled my cost already.

so did you buy it?

If it is what you want and can make it happen, then pull the trigger. If willing to travel, then broaden search, the trucks you want are out there.
A good comparison for miles and price.

Re: Help! Chance to buy this 97 f250 7.3 4x4

Hey guys, I ended up buying a different one... slightly higher miles, but a little cheaper and still in good condition. I will make a new post with photos and details! Thanks again for all of your help and guidance. Very much appreciated.

I am excited to officially be a part of the community now!
