How do you know it is time to rebuild the turbo?

My 1995 F250 has 250,000 miles on it. I have been told my injectors will most likely need to be done soon as they will not be opperating at full effcicency.

My question is should I also plan to redo the turbo while I am at it? IF my truck is down for a couple days with injectors another day for the turbo is not huge. However, I have NO idea how to tell if my turbo needs rebuilding. Or is it just wise to rebuild at a certain number of miles?

Thanks for the help.

Basically the only thing to check is shaft play. In and out is the most critical. this can be checked by pushing in on the shaft and pulling out. There should be basically no play in these directions. If you feel anything at all then it is probably due for a rebuild.

You will probably feel some shaft play up and down, forward and back. This is absolutely normal and will not create a problem until the compressor wheel starts hitting the aluminum housing. If this happens you will hear the trubo scraming loud and clear that it is time for a rebuild, and a new wheel if you let it go very long.

Defiantly not rocket science on rebuilding a turbo, not very expensive either. Good luck!

Does the tubo need to be balanced? I have heard this term before...but does it make much of a difference in a 300-400HP daily driver?

The wheels themselves are balanced from the manufacture. Mine isn't balanced as a unit though. If your worried about it some shops can do it. If the wheel hasn't been in the housing I wouldn't worry about it.

Other one besides play is the condition of the wheels. Intake side should have sharp non rounded edges.
