Tapping noise under load and CCT

1997 Ford F-250 7.3L 4x4 Powerstroke, just removed Banks chip, still has Banks Transmission Commander installed.

Noticed while accelerating I get a tapping noise from driver side bank. It gets louder as I accelerate more and is louder on hills and under greater load. In neutral if I Rev the engine I cannot hear the tapping. And I don’t hear it coasting or maintaining speed on level streets. I was told it probably was an exhaust leak.

However after removing the Banks chip I was running a Cyliner Contribution test. And during the end of the test (might of been last or second to last cylinder so I’m guessing 7or 8) I could hear the tapping noise in the CC test.

The CCT test passed with no codes. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this tapping noise? Why I hear it under load and on CCT but not reving in idle?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Tapping noise under load and CCT

My guess is exhaust leak, order some gaskets from riff raff and some bolts from Ace hardware. Mine had a tick noise that was just exhaust leaks. The factory dud not put gaskets between the head and manifold. Check uppipes too.

Re: Tapping noise under load and CCT

Ok sorry Iím new to working on a truck and have minor work on cars so itís possible to hear it on one cylinder on the driver side bank. Not all of them would make the noise if it was an exaust manifold leak? Would this be useful in finding the leak does the CC test fire cylinders in same order as a buzz test 1-8?

The CC test IIRC measures the amount of fuel a duration of the injector. If you are only leaking at 1 cylinder then yes you could pin point it that way. Check for soot around the area

Re: Tapping noise under load and CCT

Yeah Iím hoping it could be an easy fix as tightening the two bolts on the manifold near that cylinder. More research I do seems unlikely and as the truck is over 20 years old with original manifold most likely going to be near impossibly to remove the bolts. Iíll probably soak them in PB plaster over night let me know of any other tips. Thanks
