5 speed swap

Hi guys new to this page. I have a 96 f450 2wd auto powerstroke and I'm wondering if a 5 speed tranny out of a 95 f350 4x4 powerstroke would bolt in or what all would have to be changed and what all I would need to do it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

welcome to PSN.
yes it will bolt up, but you will also have to use the transfer case.

you would be better off looking for a two wheel drive trans. they are usually a lot cheaper than the 4X4 trans.

Re: 5 speed swap

A 4x4 trans and transfer case would be sweet if you ever needed a real low gear for backing a trailer up a hill or getting something moved.

96 F250 XLT 4x4, 4:10 gears, 5 speed, Tymar intake and HX hose, downpipe, pyro and boost guages, coolant filter, Luc clutch

Do you have access to the rest of the donor truck?

I do have the whole donor truck I was hoping that the back of my auto would bolt up to the 5 speed instead of the transfer case the bolt holes look to be about the same and I do have the driveline brake on the back of my auto trans

Re: 5 speed swap

Well you said that you have an F450. Since they didn't make a 450, I'm assuming you have an F-Superduty (which is the next size larger than the F-350). If this is the case, you're in luck as the F-Superduty actually used the 4x4 ZF 5 from the factory. And instead of a transfer case, they had the parking brake assembly bolted on. So then you actually would need the 4x4 trans, and switch your parking brake assembly. Hope this makes sense....

Re: 5 speed swap

^^^^^ Good read. Actually, ONLY a 4x4 transmission would work in this truck; a 2WD tranny would not.

Re: 5 speed swap

yea, i missed that too. i read it as F350. as was already said, the F-superduty uses a 4X4 trans with the parking brake assembly bolted to the back where the transfer case should be.
