I've found hit and miss info on this subject so I thought I would start a fresh thread on it. My 97 has 177,000 and runs great. Other than smoke at startup I don't notice any signs of smoke when warmed up. I went to change the oil yesterday and found I was 3+qts low. I have don't have an external leak other than a very small amount of oil in the valley and not enough to be dripping down the back as there are no signs of oil on the driveway. This truck has not worked very hard in its life and I would be shocked if I had rings that have worn much plus its had synthetic oil from day one along with a remote bypass filtration system since about 50K. I'm inclined to think that the turbo is the source of the oil use. I have a fair amount of oil residue in the intercooler pipes and had thought this was probably due to the CCV that is still directed into the intake as I have never done the CCV mod. I don't feel any play in the turbo shaft but is it possible to be losing oil there at a slow rate that doesn't show as visible smoke out the exhaust? The loss of oil was 3+ qts in about 7500 miles.
