Zf42 fluid type

Got a 97 f250 that was a automatic and I just swapped it over to a manual. Donor transmission was a zf42 out of a 93 7.3idi. Everything went great. Truck runs like it rolled off the assembly line as a manual. I get confused when automatic transmission fluid is talked about. The book calls for synthetic mercon. I put castrol mercon v in it. Is this synthetic? I'm also getting alot of gear roll over noise. I did put a single mass flywheel on it.

Re: Zf42 fluid type

If it doesn't say synthetic, it's not. And yes, ZF requires synthetic in this transmission when it's behind a Powerstroke. Synth might reduce the rollover noise, but some fellas just overfill the tranny some by filling from the shifter opening.

Re: Zf42 fluid type

I use Redline MTF 4 quarts through the shifter top is easiest. Single mass will create more rollover. Congrats on the conversion.
