Unhappy LOST of pulling power??? Please help

I have a 1997 7.3 powerstroke with 304,000 miles. I have a DP Tuner 6 position chip (0- No start, 1- Factory setting, 2- High idle, 3- 30HP Tow, 4- 60 HP and 5- 100HP), aftermarket down pipe with straight 4" exhaust and S&B intake. Recently purchased a 2016 bumper pull travel trailer with a dry weight of around 7400lbs. Truck could not hold 65 MPH or 70 MPH on I-10 with chip set on 30 HP tow. But pulls great at speed up to 60 MPH. Even with my 20' utility trailer with my side by side on the the trailer, I can feel the light load on the truck. Truck runs great without a load. Can anyone please help me find the issue?

Re: LOST of pulling power??? Please help

stock turbo? stock injectors?
Automatic or 5 speed?
gears and tires?

There are LOTS of reasons why you may be down on power. Boost leaks are one to consider.
Do you have a scanner that can talk to your truck?

I know my 97 with 202K miles on it was pretty tired, it would run around okay but with 7400# trailer I would have been lucky to hold any sort of speed....... until I started rebuilding/upgrading and fixing things

Re: LOST of pulling power??? Please help

Yes, stock turbo and injectors. I replaced the injectors (brand new) about 7 years ago along with the glow plugs and new valve cover gaskets. I think the gears are 3.55 or 3.73, Tires are 33 1/2's with aftermarket wheels. Auotmatic trans. I do not have any aftermarket exhaust temp, trans temp or boost gauges installed at this time but am looking at getting exhaust and trans temp installed.

Re: LOST of pulling power??? Please help

smart, those will help monitor the EGT and trans temps so you don't hurt anything.
My guess is that with 304K its time for a turbo, even if the turbo is good I bet your up pipes that feed the turbo are leaking, stock gaskets just don;t make it to 304K = Won't build or hold boost.

I've been through alot with my 97 in the last year or so. It was ready for the crusher when I got it, now it straight up hauls..... I was able to hold 65-70 mph towing a 4runner on my metal car trailer up the mountain this week, in 4th and 5th gear from 5000#-9000# in elevation. That is really saying something for an old OBS
If you want to see how I rebuilt my turbo and re seated it with no more leaks checkout my build thread in my sig. This old 97 is like a new truck now when it comes to hauling

Re: LOST of pulling power??? Please help

Awesome information, thank you very much. As soon as i get home from offshore, i will definitely check the turbo up pipes and gaskets. Which turbo would you advise me using? would you advise rebuilding factory turbo or purchasing new turbo? If rebuilding factory turbo, which parts should I replace and should what brand parts should I use? Im new to this website, so what do you mean by "Check out my build thread in my sig"?

Rebuild the stock turbo, use a Garrett brand rebuild kit with the 360 degree thrust bearing.
Your turbo is actually very good the only downfall is it is not intercooled stock.
Your stock turbo is one of the easiest turbos to rebuild yourself, so its a good place to learn
Its also very cheap, I have less then $200 in my upgraded turbo rebuild, and like 10 hours of work
You can upgrade the compressor wheel to a billet aftermarket wheel that will move more air
You can run bellowed up pipes that eliminate the stock donut style gaskets they run about $480. Or you can replace the stock gaskets with thicker units that will seal better, thats what I chose to do because I plan to upgrade my turbo again in the near future.
My build thread is pretty long and winded, its like a daily blog for me as I learn these diesels, but the info you seek is in there.........
I went from being "worried I chose the wrong truck to build" to "I wouldn't change it for the world" in just a few months with this truck with just a few choice upgrades (and lots of elbow grease)

Re: LOST of pulling power??? Please help

Ok. Thank you. Really appreciate the input. I will check turbo boots when i get home and i will look into getting a turbo rebuild kit. Where do you recommend me ordering the turbo rebuild kit? Do you happen to have any part numbers i will need?

Re: LOST of pulling power??? Please help

Riff Raff Diesel or dieselOrings.com are my two favorites, but there are probably a hundred vendors

You should consider buying a rebuild kit, turbo install kit, billet wheel of some sort, and a deleted pedestal. Then decide if you want bellowed up pipes or just re install your stock up pipes and collector with new gaskets

Deleted pedestal makes it 100 times easier.
Bellowed up pipes will almost never leak again.
