e4od not locking up

Hey guys brand new here, hoping someone can help out i recently picked up a 96 3/4 4wd with e4od. well it recently went into limp mode. shifts fine through the gears up to od but never locks up. So i had the codes read and it came up, "high temp" and slipping. well after some research i founf the lockup switch trick. i tried that and still get nothing. Is it possible to replace just the tcc solenoid or clutch. I have an idea of hows transmisions work but not an exact understanding.

Tcc solenoid, yes that's an easy job, it'll be somewhere in the valve body underneath the pan.

Tc clutch? No. That requires a new torque converter.

If the solenoid were the problem you should get a code for the solenoid. Most likely the torque converter is the problem..

Take the inspection cover off of the front of the bellhousing. Does the front face of the converter look discolored? They can get blued from heat from a slipping clutch.

I'll check it the tc. Would it be worth it or practical to just replace the valve body?

No way Jose. I think Mark is entirely correct, though I don't know how quick these older trucks would be to throw a code, with all the miles on this thing, you can be pretty confident the converter clutch has worn.

So basically, a new converter is probably what you're looking at. Again, because of the mileage, a full rebuild would be a good idea, but a new converter should fix this problem.

Any chance you have a brake light stuck on?

This can also happen if the third brake light isn't working.

Re: e4od not locking up

Not if it's slipping. A brake switch would keep it from locking up, but it wouldn't cause slippage. Slipping is either a pressure problem or a worn disc. The high temps are another clue.

Re: e4od not locking up

I know my lower brake lights work. The truck does have 212k previous owner said it had tranny work. So I was planning on a reman trans and beefier tc to handle a little extra power and towing. Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no easy way to get a 5 spd auto in these is there?

Re: e4od not locking up

Not without a way to control the transmission. Just throw a C6 in there and a gear vendors OD.
