97 romping on start up.

My buddy has a 97 7.3, on every start up, including warm start ups, it romps pretty well, and rough for 5 or so seconds and hangs around 600 rpm. I plugged in my code reader and was reading his injector pusle width at 5-6 ms at start up and about 3-4 ms at regular idle. at WOT it was just under 1ms, I thought the pulse width was a little odd at start up.... any ideas? IDM possibly?

Re: 97 romping on start up.

Probably need to put new o-rings on the IPR. Injector o-rings could be seeping a little too. Mine would do this a little when it gets really cold but since I put new IPR o-rings on I don't have any romps at start up.

Re: 97 romping on start up.

Just about every Powerstroke I've delt with in the cold around here does that. One trick to try is push the accelerator down about a quarter of the way while it's cranking. Don't ask but it might start up without loping, I know the pedal's are computer controlled but I think it just sends a signal when it first fires up.

well considering it was 80* when he was showing me what it was doing.... I don't think it was a cold start issue.

The starting procedure does say "DO NOT PRESS DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR DURING STARTING."
