No wastegate?

Hey guys, just got my first diesel, new to this site, and I need some help with my truck. So I just bought a 97' powerstroke with a 5spd manual and 140k miles and its got some stuff done to the engine but I have no clue what the previous owner(s) have done to it. I brought it in to my diesel school the other day and my teacher noticed that I don't have a wastegate on my turbo. It has the little valve but no actuator. Is this a common modification? Its got a 5" straight exhaust and a chip that I can turn on from the dash, no clue what kind yet. The turbo spools up really fast even with the chip off, is this because of the no wastegate? Im a little worried about having too much boost? Is this a problem? If so should I put a stock wastegate on or an aftermarket? Thanks

Re: No wastegate?

yes,i don't know about the 97,but you don't need no stinking waste gate!
you can use your foot for a waste gate,on 99-03 it is a van turbo or non waste gate housing upgrade.i think bean sells them.
useually has a larger exhuast outlet.

Re: No wastegate?

The stock turbo does not have a wastegate it has an exhaust backpressure valve to aid in warm up.

Re: No wastegate?

Tom is correct. They may have chaged the housing out for a smaller one though to make spool up quicker though.

If you are worried about having too much boost put a boost gauge in it.

Since it is a 97 and you live in California there is a good chance that the truck is a Cali version with the larger injectors (more like the SD's have) in it. It should run pretty well with the chip turned up.

Re: No wastegate?

Thanks guys, so I think ill just leave it alone and just put a boost gauge in and call it good. I'll put some pics up of my truck with the shaved door handles this weekend, I see some of you are wondering.

So does the early 99 have a wastegate or is that non wastegated as well? I thought that they used just about the same turbos that the OBS had.
