Quick Hesitation, Hard Shifts, CEL and OD lights flashing.

On my way to work this morning everything was normal, came to a stop light, light turned green, pressed the gas and the truck stumbled (then recovered quickly), the CEL came on, the OD light was flashing, and the truck started shifting HARD. No loss of power/hesitation after the initial press of the gas. Pressed the brakes to turn into my parking lot, the CEL went away, the OD light stopped flashing, but the truck continues to shift very hard. Any ideas?

1997 F-250 4x4 Auto (stock) I just picked up the truck about a month ago, and it has been running great until now.

There are no stored codes, and the transmission fluid is bright red with no burnt smell.

Put a good scanner on the truck and monitor the datastream as you drive.

What scanner did you use to pull the codes?

Porch Monkey. It's cool, I'm taking it back.

Being a 1997, that scanner should be able to read the datastream from the obd2 port. Was the key cycled before you checked for codes? Soft codes may have dropped, but any hard codes would have been there. This sounds electrical and it could be a few things.

I've seen ICP sensor/wiring issues that acted similar to that, but the OD light wouldn't flash (hard shifting would be there).

Possible pedal assembly issues, but a code would be there and the od light wouldn't flash.

On superduty trucks, the OD button wiring would short out causing similar issues..

The key was cycled. I'm going to put the scanner back on it before I leave today and see what happens.

If the OD was flashing it should have thrown a code. Did you speedometer work? My guess would be the VSS in the rear. Tranny not seeing actual speed for the flashing OD and Cel for the RAbs side of the sensor? WOrth a shot--pull the sensor out of the diff and clean it.

Yes, the speedo was functioning correctly, but I will check it out.
