broken exhaust manifold bolts

My 1997 f-350 crew-cab,4x4,auto,4 inch Superlift, 226K, PSD popped the head off the drivers side rear exhaust manifold bolt. ANY advice on getting the remaining bolts out without breaking would be great !!!

if you can weld a nut onto it and then continue out with it, or maybe put a pipe wrench on it and see if you can turn it out that way...the ones that ive broke off i had to re-drill and tap, but i would definately try welding a nut on it if you can get to it...

Re: broken exhaust manifold bolts

no can do. its the rear most bolt behind the up pipe. i need to get the manifold off to get to it but i'm worried i'll have more broken bolts. thought about getting some of loc-tites new freeze & release spray and trying it to see if it works.

Re: broken exhaust manifold bolts

I had one broke off on mine on the drivers side to. It was rusted in solid into the manifold I had to saw it off as close to the manifold as possible with a dremel . the remaining part still in the head spun right out with a vice grips. the part in the manifold took a big ass hammer and a punch.

good luck

Re: broken exhaust manifold bolts

I got the same bolt out, but on a SD, probably more room to work with. The bolt was broken off flush with head.

I used a trusty left handed bit, as soon as they bite the bolt comes right out. I had to use a 90* drill however and this was with manifold ON.

After getting a new one in the manifold was warped enough it had to come off anyway DONT tighten the other bolt on that port to try and stop a leak, it WILL warp the chit out of the manifold. I tried.

PB Blaster the crap outta the bolts everyday, for 2 weeks, that's what I did. I swore none of the bolts would come out, but 13 did.

The rest of them I torched the heads off and then yanked the manifolds off. After that I just welded nuts onto them and removed with a socket and ratchet.
