cold start question for the gurus

95 F250 PSD - totally stock.

Last year I had a couple of burnt injector harnesses and my IDM crapped out from water in it (possibly the 2 were connected issues?)
Anyway, I sourced an IDM from a newer truck 99, I believe, fixed the harnesses, ended up removing the passenger head to extract a broken autolite glowplug from the PO (GRRRRR - it was the only autolite, all the rest were Beru) and put it all back together. I put in 8 new Motorcraft glow plugs at the time It gave me great service all through last winter and this summer. Now temps have gotten cold and it is very cranky starting up first time each day. Both batts are new and it cranks good and fast.

When I turn the key on, my WTS light comes on and I get a huge drain on the dash electrical gauge - huge, as in - same as always.
But, it cranks more than usual (but still not excessive cranking), and when it starts it is cranky and smokes up the whole neighborhood for a while.

It sure feels and smells to me like my GPs aren't getting juice, but if that is the case then where is all the juice going when I see that huge drain with the WTS light on? does the GPR suck it up somehow?

Re: cold start question for the gurus

The idm you put in is for twin shot injectors. You have single shot injectors, there could be the problem. I know you can run twin shots with a single shot idm but i don't think it works the other way.

Re: cold start question for the gurus

The newer IDM gives more voltage than your stock 95 and that is a GOOD thing. The IDMs from 94-03 are ALL interchangeable.

As for your "hard start" you may just have one or 2 bad glow plugs, or even a bad plug going into a valve cover gasket. You need to get out an ohm meter and check it out

Looking for Blue 40-20-40 seat for OBS. PM me if any known

^^^ Do what Brad says first, if you don't find anything wrong then your injectors are probably getting tired.

Re: cold start question for the gurus

Thanks very much for all the info/advice. I will def get the DMM out this weekend and check things out.
If my injectors are in fact tired, can I 'upgrade' to twin shot injectors (since I already have the proper IDM)?

Re: cold start question for the gurus

No you were given incorrect information as far as that goes. What you have is an IDM out of a super duty which is nothing more than a higher voltage version of the same IDM that was in your truck originally. In order to run split shot injectors you would have to have your PCM reflashed to run them.
