Smoke from turbo area

Last week my truck didn't start for the first time in years. It cranked fine but wouldn't fire. White smoke came from the tailpipe during the cranking but also from under the hood. Quite a bit. When I looked under the hood it appeared to me that the smoke was coming from where the downpipe connects to the turbo.
I let the truck sit for awhile and then it did start. I had one other similar but less severe episode a few days later and smoke came from the hood again but this time it fired up.

I dismissed all the smoke as a result of the truck simply not starting and the exhaust not getting pushed out as it should but a friend says, "no smoke should come from anywhere under the hood regardless of whether it starts".
He thinks I might have a leaky exhaust or other problem.

I'd like other opinions. thanks, Steve

Re: Smoke from turbo area

A hard start will often give a bunch of smoke as you're filling the cyls with fuel. A closed EBPV could force smoke out around the vband clamp at the turbo if the clamp is loose. You could check the dp clamp to turbo, but you should clearly hear an exh leak. Verify if the firewall is black and sooty.

As it cools here, your hard starts may become more frequent-- hows the maintenance been? You may need do some review of the GPs/relay/batteries/etc. Time to get ready for winter...
