Lots of cranking and white smoke...starts eventually

Ok guys, this is my first problem post so bear with me...For the last week its been pretty cold in the mornings, and ive need 1-3 GP cycles to start and a little bit more cranking than usual...Today when i went to start her up around 11am, bout 55 degrees (pretty warm), it just cranked and cranked, even after a few cycles.....white smoke was coming out of the exhaust, then it finally fired up...so im thinking i need new Glow Plugs or a Relay..what do yall think? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need to check your glow plugs and relay. If you do need them replace the glow plugs with Motorcraft Beru ZD-11 glow plugs only. All of the other ones tend to swell the tips in the heads which can make it near impossible to get them out later on. Also if you need a new relay you have two better choices. Either a stancor or a plow relay(can't remember brand).

What is the average price each of a ZD-11 glow plug and what is the Ford P/N?
Local Ford guy looked at me like I was retarded when I asked about a ZD-11.

Local ford guy is a retard then because that is the only one the dealer carries. They run around 12-14 bucks a piece at the dealer. Online they are under 10 bucks each. Ford part # 4FTZ-12A342-BA.

Re: Lots of cranking and white smoke...starts eventually

For the last few days i have let the GP's cycle once and i wait about 10 seconds after the WTS goes off, and it pops right off...so maybe i dont need a relay or plugs...yet...

Just cause the WTS light goes off doesnt mean the glowplugs are off, they stay on for up to 2 mins when you cycle the key.

But yes its time for glowplugs and a new relay.

Re: Lots of cranking and white smoke...starts eventually

My truck was doing the EXACT same thing last month. I replaced GP's and relay with no improvement. One of the veterans on here suggested I test all of the GP system. I was getting no voltage to the post on the relay because the terminal ring was dirty . I was only out $150 from Riff Raff for the parts so it wasn't too bad. Truck starts like a beast now. Might be worth taking a wire brush to your connectors first.

Good point. I should check the wiring first to make sure I am getting good power to the plugs before I go changing them. There is only 50 000 mostly hwy km on these plugs so I don't fully believe they are bad yet.

Whereabouts is the relay for them hiding? New to these Fords.......
