Fuel Tank Selector Switch

Has anyone had any experience with repairing the fuel tank selection system on the OBS? My truck is stuck on the back tank, which leads me to believe that it is the switch on the dash.

Any help with wiring diagrams, diagnostics, wire colors, etc. is greatly appreciated.

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Switch

It is possible that the selector switch has gone bad. It is very common for the selector valve on the frame rail to fail and either get stuck on one tank or the other or more commonly in between tanks when trying to switch between them.

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Switch

So if the selector switch on the frame also controls which sending unit is being read by the gauge? I am curious because switching to the front tank on the dash changes nothing. The gauge continues to read the back tank.

Thanks for helping me out.

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Switch

Yep everything runs through the selector valve on the frame. The selector valve may not be moving at all which could be why it is only reading the rear tank. Of course I am arm chairing it from a computer screen. The switch on the dash is the same one in gas trucks. Grab one out of a junk yard and try it first. If that doesn't work you will have to source a selector valve for a diesel and they aren't real easy to find.

Speeddemon:
Thanks for your help. I just found out that a friend is thinking of buying a 91 diesel for the engine, so I might have some free parts I can get.

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Switch

i had this same problem, i bought a new valve from Ford. Only after buying another failed valve from the junk yard. It's pretty pricey but got the tanks to switch back and forth. Try the switch on the dash first though its way cheaper!

Re: Fuel Tank Selector Switch

I see the switch on LMC trucks for $39.95 and a 3 way valve is 49.95, and OEM is $209.95. When I get time, I will dig deeper.
