Re: pulling the trans

6 bolts total. 2 on top

Pretty easy to pull, just hope you have a jack that will reach high enough

Re: pulling the trans

I don't recall how many bolts, I think it's four that are accessed from the top. Raise the back of the transmission/transfer case up and you'll have better access to the top bolts from the engine bay side.

With a real trans jack it's easy to pull it.

I always replace the release lever while I'm in there (it's only about $20). Cheers!

Re: pulling the trans

OK step by step. First disconnect the batteries. Then unbolt the starter and let it hang. Then unbolt and move the exhaust out of the way. Next disconnect and relocate the wiring. Next unbolt the front and rear drive shafts after blocking the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. You only need to unbolt the front drive shaft at the transfer case as well as the same for the rear drive shaft. On the rear drive shaft if your truck has a carrier bearing assembly, remove one bolt and loosen the other so you can swing the drive shaft out of the way for transfer case removal. Next disconnect the transfer case shifter(two 8mm bolts on 1356 or one 13mm nut on 4407 transfer case) and push shifter up out of the way. Next is to pop the shift linkage off at transfer case. Then unbolt the six 13 mm bolts holding transfer case to transmission. Remove transfer case. Next place a jack under the transmission and put minor pressure on it. Unbolt the transmission cross member and remove it as well as the skid plate. 4 10mm bolts on skid plate and 6 15mm bolts with 18mm nuts for cross member and two 18mm nuts for transmission mount. Next jack up transmission and remove cross member. Gently lower the jack until you can see the bell housing bolts. Using a long extension, swivel and short socket with an impact gun you can now remove the bell housing bolts. once removed you can slide the transmission back and lower it. Oh I almost forgot, you need to disconnect the slave cylinder and the shifter for the transmission first.
