lurch/random shut off

1996 powerstroke, all stock except big air filter and TS performance 6 pos chip. 118000 miles. Got to my truck after work, fired her up, she idled for ten seconds, and shutoff. Cranked right back up. Started driving home, and every now and again, maybe 8 times on a 15 minute drive, the truck would lurch, sounded like the engine just completely stopped firing, and half a second later I would hear the injectors clack and she would start moving again. I didn't notice any crazy indications or lights when this would happen. Where should I start looking?

Re: lurch/random shut off

My first instinct would be to change the cam sensor, but check it for codes if you can get ahold of a code reader or scanner.

Re: lurch/random shut off

Went out this afternoon, cranked for ten seconds with no tach indication, put in a new cam position sensor, fixed her right up! Thanks!

Re: lurch/random shut off

Keep a spare one on your glove box. I've changed them on the side of the highway before. Sometimes they fail completely without any symptoms.
Glad it was a simple fix!
