Cold Start Smoking

All,

Wanted to bouce something off of you as I am going through my diagnostics. My '95 smokes a visible amount continually following a cold start up ( 40's and lower). The truck starts and idles nicely with no hesitation. The glow system and harnessing has been gone through and proven to work properly. It runs fine. When the temp begins to rise in the engine, the smokes becomes less and less until it completely quits. It is definitely fuel smoke (grey color and smells of unburned or partially burnt fuel) not oil or coolant related. I am going to try plugging in the block heater and see if this changes the smoking or conditions. This would signify it is cylinder wear related. I would expect if it is cylinder wear related, I would have smoking at some level all the time. The truck has been well maintained all of its life. So my thoughts are how likely are the possible causes:

1. My coolant temp gauges fluctuates and stays "cold" due to an electric wire issue. I know it is a break in the wire, I just haven't located the break yet. Could this command enriching and that is excess fuel? Is there only one coolant sensor for the dash and the ECM?

2. Could it be a HPOP wear issue causing a poor spray pattern with the thicker oil, which causes poor combustion? I can try and plug the oil heater in only, and see if that changes it.

3. What about injectors. I have seen videos and read some thread that described the same issue and the injectors were found to be either worn or failed, leading to smoking at startup.

As far as general engine health, EGT and boost are in their proper ranges during operation such as towing. Power is good and it starts well. Oil consumption is what I would deem normal from my experience from working in a shop on a fleet of T444E equipped commercial trucks. I have to add 1-2 quarts or less between oil changes. The truck is really only used for towing our toy hauler RV and I work it hard. I never usually have to down shift out of 5th and keep the cruise at 65-70mph pulling about 7500lbs worth of trailer.

Thoughts to what it might be?

Honestly if it clears up once it warms up then it sounds pretty normal of a cold start for a 7.3. My 97 always smoked like that when i first started it in the morning on days that it was relativly cool out. I have several buddys with obs that there trucks do the same thing too

Re: Cold Start Smoking

You may want to test the EOT sensor as it compares to ambient air temp .. A sluggish(worn) IPR can cause this also ...

Rick,

Is there a temp vs. resistance chart somewhere? As far as the IPR testing, if my PCM hasn't had a calibration update to OBD2 calibration so I can't use my Scantool, how can I check it?

Rick,

My Scantool just doesn't function with my truck. I know Ford has an update cal to allow OBD2 protocol tools to function with the PCM. I imagine this cal would unlock that feature set that I know my tool is capable of.
