1997 7.3 ..will this thermostat work?

Hey all,

I decided to change out my t stat and housing today. I picked up both at my local IH dealer. The question I have is regarding the t stat. The version the parts guy gave me was part number 1845804C2. (He looked it up) I installed it and it seems to open and close just fine, no noted issues with the cooling system. The t stat had the updated gasket, not the o ring style. Seated perfectly.

I'm questioning the t stat being correct because this version looks like a standard t stat... It doesn't have the long stem like the one I took out had. Looks like a gasser t stat actually.

I looked everywhere online to find any real reference to this part number.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Re: 1997 7.3 ..will this thermostat work?

Thanks Stroker, after digging some more i believe this t stat is for pre-96 7.3's. From what I read, the water pumps were redesigned beginning in 1996 with a coolant bypass, so the long stem is needed.

Thanks for the p/n.....i'm headed to IH!

Re: 1997 7.3 ..will this thermostat work?

Got the new CORRECT t stat in place. I also replaced the thermo housing, cant believe is actually held water. RUSTY. Best of all, no leaks.

Also, my local International dealer didn't stock the thermostat I needed, had to run up to the stealership @ $58.

I'm guessing Ford uses their own water pump design than Int'l uses for the T444E?
