97 7.3 Won't start

I have a 97 7.3 that I have been trying to sell. I don't drive the truck other than to crank it up and drive it a couple miles down the road every week just to keep the batteries charged. The other day, I was letting it idle and was about to check the tranny fluid, when it cut off. It still spins, but doesn't start. I have a 02 7.3 that I have had the same problem with but it has always been just a blown fuse. I don't have a computer to hook up and see where the problem is. I'm almost positive it's electrical,(has diesel, has great oil pressure while spinning, no knocking or unusual noises), can someone tell me some checks I can preform with a Multi-Meter or give me some advice???

Re: 97 7.3 Won't start

This makes 2 of us... Just finished putting electric fuel on my truck and it won't start. Mechanical pump died, so it was a good time to convert to electric.

Have 60psi of fuel pressure and the tach shows 150~200 rpms when cranking, so I don't believe that it's the CPS. I don't get any smoke out the exhaust, so I think it's either IDM of IPR related. Is there any way to check if either is working without a scanner?

Thanks!

Kurtis, does the WTS light come on when you turn the key to RUN? Does the tach move when you crank it?

I had to wait till I got home to try it.

When I turn the key to run the "Wait To Start" light comes on for a few seconds then goes out. While starting the "Engine Temp", "Water In Fuel" and "Fuel Filter" lights are all on.

Is there any way to ohm the CPS to make sure it's working? Also, can I check the IDM with a multimeter anyway???

Is your tach moving when you try to start it?

When you say no smoke it leads me to think that fuse #22 for the fuel bowl heater has blown.

If you're getting the WTS light, the fuse #22 is good.

Re: 97 7.3 Won't start

I've seen the fuse problems, so I pulled each and every fuse just to double check. I'm thinking I have a bad sensor or a short, I'm just trying to narrow down the culprit...

Re: 97 7.3 Won't start

These forums help alot of people so I wanted to let everyone know what I found in case someone else see's this problem.

I had this same problem 10 years ago with a previous truck. Like I said, everything seemed to be working fine other than it would not crank, it would spin but not start. I removed the chip and it started and is running fine. The chip is not damaged, but I guess it got a loose connection or a little corrosion. Either way, removing the chip fixed the problem... Thanks everyone...
