Steering Column removal

Since the Haynes manual didn't really explain how to remove a steering column very well, I wrote this up quick. Hopefully it will help if someone is looking at doing this in the future.

Re: Steering Column removal

sweet write up man, the local steering column specialist mobile repair wants 250.00 just to fix my issue, not counting unseen failed items!

I'll just have to give it a whirl and see what happens.

thanks for taking the time to write it up!

Re: Steering Column removal

And if you're doing this because the steering wheel bearings are shot:
Ford Steering Wheel Bearing Repair Kit: F6AZ-3605-AA
Plastic Lower Bearing Retainer (if you break it): F0DZ-3518-A

About $100 list for the repair kit, it has all of the parts to replace the two cheesy factory bearings with two more cheesy bearings and a set of very hard to comprehend instructions.

Shift quadrant cable, a little cable from the steering column to the instrument panel that moves the auto shift position quadrant indicator. Disconnect this before you jerk out the column. Heres the part number if you break it, ask me how I know: F5TZ-7A110-AA.

I used two welding clamp Vise-Grips to compress the tilt wheel springs to reassemble the column. It may be possible to use two C-clamps. Or have a buddy help you.
