Rotary Ignition Switch

Tonight something happened to my ignition switch. It seems to be stuck in the "run" position. I can turn the switch to "off", "acc", and when I hit "start" the starter turns. It feels like there is no resistance when you turn it. Switch bad? Something in the column? What parts do I need and how bad is this to change?

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

I hope you figure it out, mine is doing something very similar. I think its a combo of the key switch and "the rack" I believe, but I've been putting tearing mine apart now for a while, lol

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

Well.... I took apart the column, or more like I took the bottom cover off and found the rotary switch comes out real easy. I am hoping that is the broken piece. Still any input from anyone would be great.

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

Fix it before you get it to the "OFF" position. If it gets locked in that position, ya have to go thru the PITA of drillin the pin...if I remember correctly, anyway. Consult a Haynes or Chilton manual for directions on the swap-out.

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

My problem is deeper than the key switch. I guess I will start to take the column apart, as soon as I can find a steering wheel puller. Anyone ever taken one apart? My Haynes manual doesn't have an exploded view either. Anyone have one of those?

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

Not sure what the issue is in terms of fixing it. I just did a full E4OD to ZF-5 swap including the columns. To get the steering wheel off (as I wanted to switch those too). What I did was loosen the steering wheel nut so where ample threads between nut and wheel. Now I grabbed the wheel and pulled with even pressure top and bottom. To a bit of work but was able to get it off. When you remove the nut look to the end of the steering shaft as there should be a small yellow dot or punch mark on the end of the shaft face. To re-align wheel and shaft punch mark should be in 12:00 o'clock position.

You might just need to lude all moving parts if sticking tumbler. I cleaned the contacts on the underside of the wheel and reapplied dialectric grease to contacts. Also used white lithium grease on other moving parts. Just take your time.

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

So I took more of the column apart and discovered the rod ( I think thats what you call it. Long plastic piece runing through the center of the column) was broke. I have no clue how you get it out, or if I can get a new one.

My mechanic tells me they never break in the OBS style trucks. That scares me a little that maybe more is wrong.

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

they are available new, go to partsguyed.com or one of the ford dealership sponsors and they can get it for you. partsguyed sent me a blow up and told me what I would need, aparantley they do break, he knew what it was right off the bat.

Re: Rotary Ignition Switch

That "rod" piece does break in the OBS's, mine broke a couple months back. Parts break after extended life and use.

Did you fix it yourself?
