Hard steering

My 97 4wdCC has been progressively been getting harder to steer. It doesn't wander or have a lot of slack in the wheel or leaks in PS and its full. Lately its got a creaking sound coming from the wheel, like a broken spring makes in a tape measure. It's almost non-power assist now. At first I thought the box was just going bad but now I'm wondering if it might be in the wheel/column.

Any ideas?

Doesn't roll with anyone or tag along to be cool...

Re: Hard steering

That or the box but wouldn't the pump whine? Most I've had go bad will. And with the creaking in the wheel? Is there a detent or spring in there that could be jamming up?

Re: Hard steering

I had the same thing happen, it turned out to be the steering column. Took about 2 weeks of trying different stuff to figure it out. Finally got to the point were the steering would almost seem to lock, really a PITA when trying to back a trailer up. Then one day, my horn started going off when i was turning, figured it out really quick after that. But prior to that point, I had checked everything besides the column. My column was trashed, so I replaced it.

Was it making that grinding creaking noise?
I'd love to rebuild mine if its possible, no extra funds till after TS and I'd like to take this truck.

Re: Hard steering

Yes, it started to grind and squeak, I priced out to rebuild mine, I have the tilt wheel. Well between the entire collar, bearings and electronic ring plus everything else that was shot, I ended up going to the salvage yard and getting an entire bolt in column for less than $200 with warranty. It was about a hr swap and IMO I could not have rebuilt mine for that with my time included.
