I recently changed the rearend gears in my 96 dually from a 4:10 to a 3:55 and now around 70mph the speedo jumps all over the place it has not been recalibrated yet could that be the problem or is it something different?

Re: gear change and speedo problems

I don't think the speedo needs recalibrated if you swap gears... Do some searching on that. But I'm pretty sure the vss reads after that so only tire size changes will require recalibration.

Re: gear change and speedo problems

changing your gears will not change the speedo reading, the VSS reads off a tone gear that is bolted to the ring gear. It never changes sizes so it will read the same.

Sounds like you have some metal or other crap in the VSS. Pull the sensor and clean it. If you still have the issue its time to change the sensor.
