truck wont start, makes clicking sound

my truck had been sounding like it was getting harder to start. Last week it wouldnt start for me, just made a clicking sound. I changed the starter and it fired right up. now getting ready to leave work today it wouldnt start again. I had a starter selonoid in the truck, thought that might be the problem. Changed them out and still wouldnt start, same clicking sound as before. Any ideas to check before I have it towed to a mechanic?

Check all the wiring on the starter... Did you try jumping the starter solenoid?

Re: truck wont start, makes clicking sound

i would check the wiring to the batteries. my truck was doing the same thing, the wires are one huge a$$ harness that connects the two batteries then goes to the starter and soliniod. any corision will make it hard to start, think of it like a garden hose and there is a rock jammed in there, sure it will run but not very good. now back to the issue... on my truck i replaced the starter, solonoid, and battery wiring harness and it started right up.

Checked voltage at batteries, and starter and had 12 volts before and trying to start. Checked all wires. They seem good. A guy at work told me it might have a parking safety switch. Is this true? How could I check if it does?

Re: truck wont start, makes clicking sound

If your neutral safety switch went bad you would still be able to start it by jumping the solenoid. Had 1 go bad on my 93 & it did that. I'd pull the connections off your battery's & clean them off good, grease them (I just use bearing grease) then reinstall & tighten down good. I've seen that fix a lot of issues (even when the voltage was good on the battery's) & it won't cost you anything but an hour to try.
