CB question!

Well I bought my antenna's today to hook up to the CB so I can use it.
I meant to buy 2 antenna's with 2 seperate wires for each antennas. I bought them together and they came with with a wire that goes from both antenna's into one cable, then into the cb. I only want to hook up one of the antennas, because I heard they don't work well together if they're closer than 8 foot. By the way they're going on the mirrors. Even if they are fine closer than that I don't want to bother running the wire for the other antenna. So one antenna will be functional, and the other will be for looks. I don't see any advantages to having more than one antenna anyways.
What I'm asking is, can I cut the wire going to the 2nd antenna and use it as one cable?
Or should I just coil up the wire for the second antenna and put it away somewhere?

If that makes sense...

Re: CB question!

I don't know about cutting the wires, but If it was me, I'd just coil it up and tuck it away out of site.

I will speak from experience and say that the antennas on the mirrors are NOISY! I might not be so bad for the big rigs with mounts above the top of the window, but on a PSD, the antennas HOWL on the highway. I don't notice the noise until about 40mph.
I'm going to get a single on the roof, or put the duals on the front of the bed.

Re: CB question!

alright, I'll see how I like it when I'm done. See how annoying it is, but I think I'm going to just tuck it away for now

Re: CB question!

As for the wire thing, I would say either just coil up the unused side, or if you feel like buying another wire somewhere get one made for a single antenna.

As for the noise issue I wouldn't say they are noisy, but maybe I am not that sensitive to the noise they make. I don't really start to notice it till about 4-45mph and they don't seem to make all that much more than maybe some slightly aggressive tires around 75-80 and above. Its certainly nothing that would hinder conversation.

Re: CB question!

I put it all together, and just chopped up one side of the wire. I mounted one antenna and used just the end of one side of the wire, after I cut it off, and hooked it up and just dropped it into the door. But that antenna's fake. The other one I hooked up, ran a ground from the mount into the door then through the boot between the door and the truck. I ran it up above and just tuked the extra wire up above the visor and plugged it in.
All I get is static on all the stations? Is it because of my location. I'm not very close to any major highways, I'm about 10 miles from the closest highway (I-69).
Is this normal, or did I do something wrong?

Re: CB question!

No, you CANNOT just cut the co-ax. Buy a seperate piece the length you need.

Re: CB question!

this is a standard length is 18 ft. but i have had good results with a 9ft piece. are your antennas tuneable? or are they the "Firestik" antenna type with the wire wrapped around a fiberglass mast? if so , the antennas are not tuneable. However I'd still have the SWR checked.
