Cool Air filter / Air FLOW

I had upgraded my 02 F350 7.3 to the Donaldson’s intake with fender sleeve & Zoodad mod a couple years back. It seems I keep coming across the same question/comments. That the Donaldson, be it that it’s a good air cleaner may not be so good in air flow - I’m being told! I know the better/more air flow you get the cooler EGT’s & more MPG’s can be achieved.
Two questions I have then; really how restrictive is the Donaldson air filter & is there a direct replacement air filter with better/more air flow?
Most of my driving is not in very dusty/dirty area’s & I figure if I plan to be in those type places I can switch the filter back to the Donaldson. My main concern is to get cooler EGT’s & better MPG’s especially when towing. Or is it even worth it to change anything?

Re: Air filter / Air FLOW

With your mods, don't worry about it.

You aren't making enough power or pulling enough air with your mods to go beyond the capacity of the AIS intake.

When you can put in a brand new Donaldson filter, take it on a WOT run, and completely suck down the filter minder, then you'll know you're running a restrictive intake for your power level.

Re: Air filter / Air FLOW

Thanx for the input guys. I think I'll leave what got alone. Like you said with my mods I got and what I do, I should be good with the Donaldson AIS Intake System with the AIS Foam fender Sleeve...
I just keep getting these comments and ppl trying to "sell" me a different intake/filter saying it flows more air and that the Donaldson AIS/filter is restrictive....

Re: Air filter / Air FLOW

Air filtration is a compromise. If it stops more dirt, it's more restrictive assuming identical surface area.

Like others have stated though, for a near stock truck, better to keep the excellent air filtration the Donaldson offers you.

I use to run a huge fleetguard because I knew it filtered very well. At a quarter throttle it would collapse my filter minder. Then I added a plain jane AFE, not even the Proguard 7. It was better, but I still had restriction problems.

I now have two large standard AFE air filters and no longer get any restriction even flowing 60psi on a GT42R which is awesome.

Realistically at cruising throttle positions none of the setups should have any restriction.

I'm officially...Stroke-less.

Re: Air filter / Air FLOW

The AIS will provide excellent filtration efficiency, but will not improve overall restriction or allow much additional air flow in the configuration that Ford uses. The Tymar Intake will provide excellent filtration efficiency as well as decrease restriction to the turbo and add significant air flow.

quote:
“Tymar is going to give you better flow but AIS is going to give you unmatched filtration…the AIS plus it will last a LONG time, like 60K miles…”

Although the AIS will give better filtration efficiency, you are only talking about 1/10 of a percent over the filter Tymar Performance Intakes use at initial filtration efficiencies. Not enough of a difference to really differentiate between the two.

For the longevity, you have to start talking about restriction ranges in both stock and aftermarket applications and how dirt will affect them. AIS has a larger capacity, but not across the restriction ranges once installed on the truck. Because of the configuration you are not lowering restriction significant over stock levels, but you are receiving better filtration compared to the stock intake.

The Tymar Intake will allow lower restriction levels and lasts approximately 15K miles in a restriction range LOWER than stock. If you want to go with longevity of filter, you can continue using the same filter and will simply not experience the positive benefits of lower than stock restriction levels.

We only carry the BEST parts and never compromise just to get a sale.
