Tryin to figure out how paint my grille

I have an 03 super duty that has a chrome billet grille, it came with it stock. My question is would i need to sand all that chrome off or can i just clean it real good, primer it and then paint it glossy black?

When I did mine I found that it came off real quick. I went on Ebay and found a paintable one for like $30 and Started to work on that one.

Countryboyroy, what did you sand it down with? I did sand mine but maybe not enough. Was your that plastic cover chrome or what?

Re: Tryin to figure out how paint my grille

yeah my obs grill was chrome, I wanna say I used 80grit, was done last summer but I know I sprayed on primer then found some green paint at auto zone that was a very close match, after a couple of coats and enough time to dry I sprayed on some clear coat.

It wasnt anything special, just some rattle can auto paint at auto zone.

Ill forgive for the countryboyroy part too lol, Im far from that slob

Re: Tryin to figure out how paint my grille

Best way is to glass bead or sand blast it. Just lightly. Then use a good self etch primer. After that prime it up with a 2k primer ( primer that has a hardner ) then top coat with any color you like. This way is The best way I know to get it to last. Getting a paint to match grille is much easier but most likely It will need prep to.

I know when I did the plastic paint it held longer than the standard paint. You know the one that bonds to plastic. I am still playing around with different colors and paint combanations so I am still playing on my chrome grille.

Sand blast or media blasting sounds like it would work great. May be next thing I try.

Harbor frieght has small hand held ones for like $30. In the long run it will be cheaper then sandpaper. As for plastic paints. They're all the same. It's the flex agent that some put into theirs. I'm talking automotive refinish products not rattle can.
