What do you do with the truck? I think it is just the crappy TC/tranny that bugs you. You definitely need to sit in/drive a truck with a BTS or JW or other built tranny. World of difference.
BTS is the best mod I have done to date.

Re: auto to stick conversion?

If you (like me) just don't like automatic transmissions, even a BTS won't satisfy you. Personally the fact that a transmission has to be modded to make it stand up really turns me off of them.

As for cost, the hardest thing is finding the ZF6. You can buy one online, but I can't find any prices at the moment. Prices for the ZF6 on a gasser are around $3,200. I'm sure it's a little more for the diesel. Then you'll need a clutch and perhaps a new flywheel. I believe the auto uses the same transfer case, but I really couldn't say.

As for fab work, you'll have to cut and weld a bit on the sheet metal in the cab floor, as the ZF6 is taller than the slushbox. You may need to elongate or shorten a drive-shaft or two, I really couldn't say.

Your best bet is to find a wrecked truck at a junk yard, buy the transmission, clutch, flywheel, clutch pedal assembly, drive-shafts, and maybe transfer case. The actual work isn't all that hard, but there's plenty of parts to get. You could offset this cost of course by selling your automatic transmission. If you get a good price on everything, you might get out of this with your wallet only a couple grand lighter.

Re: auto to stick conversion?

that was the plan
when i lived in sidney mt i worked for a guy that bought wrecked super duty's and rebuilt them
and he was a strictly auto man so if a six speed came in he most likely converted to an auto
so i am hoping that i can swing a deal with him and swap most parts with him
so you have to change the floor pan AND do further cutting/welding to cab itself?

Re: auto to stick conversion?

I gave 1900 dollars for the brand new crate ZF6 in my truck. You can pick up a reman for about the same price usually.

Call Southern Gear in Atlanta Ga and see what they want for a ZF6 reman. Be aware that there will likely be a core charge of around 500 bucks as well.

If you get serious about it let me know as I can tell you EVERY little thing that will have to be changed and I personally have a couple harnesses you might want as well as a spare clutch pedal assembly.

Maybe we should trade.....your auto for my manual

Although I don't think I've got the energy for another project right now.

Re: auto to stick conversion?

How many miles you got on the auto, and what's its condition?

I can't believe I'm even considering this right now...

Oh, and how far do you live from TN? No that's not Turbonetics

Re: auto to stick conversion?

I don't think it would take all that long on my end at all. Basiclally just the same as a clutch swap for me, but just putting back a flexplate and an auto instead of the manual. When I go this route it will be controlled via a stand-alone module with a joystick, so not harness issues for me.

I think it could happen in a weekend. The only thing that is a variable is how receptive his underbody will be to the top of the ZF6, and the hole for the shifter in his floor.

Just depends on if he would be willing to meet in TN at swamps to do it. I know my way around that shop blindfolded and their tools, lifts and such make this type of thing a breeze.

Not to mention I could prooobably get em to let me use a couple bays for a weekend...
