If you (like me) just don't like automatic transmissions, even a BTS won't satisfy you. Personally the fact that a transmission has to be modded to make it stand up really turns me off of them.
As for cost, the hardest thing is finding the ZF6
. You can buy one online, but I can't find any prices at the moment. Prices for the ZF6
on a gasser are around $3,200. I'm sure it's a little more for the diesel. Then you'll need a clutch and perhaps a new flywheel. I believe the auto uses the same transfer case, but I really couldn't say.
As for fab work, you'll have to cut and weld a bit on the sheet metal in the cab floor, as the ZF6
is taller than the slushbox. You may need to elongate or shorten a drive-shaft or two, I really couldn't say.
Your best bet is to find a wrecked truck at a junk yard, buy the transmission, clutch, flywheel, clutch pedal assembly, drive-shafts, and maybe transfer case. The actual work isn't all that hard, but there's plenty of parts to get. You could offset this cost of course by selling your automatic transmission. If you get a good price on everything, you might get out of this with your wallet only a couple grand lighter.
