Wastegate

How can you tell if my wastegate is working?

On my 01 I can hear the wastegate working because it sounds like a jet, but on my 02 cant recall ever hearing it. Could it be stuck? If it is that would cause high egt's correct?

Thanks

Re: Wastegate

That is not your wastegate you hear that is the EBPV. When its cold it closes and makes your exhasut sound like a turbine engine. Its very doubtful you are hearing you wg over the open intake and engine. If you have your red line plugged in and you see no more than mid 20s boost with a custom chip the wastgate is likely working. Issue is if you plan to stay with stock they open progressively so you are losing boost for a long time to keep it where it wants. If you get the manual boost master actuator and unhook the vacuum setup. You can dial it in to open right at a specific boost and not before. If A person plans to stick witha stock turbo setup that is IMO the best thing to do. It will keep your turbo alive and prevetn you from spin up a ton of basck pressuer that does nothing but bad things. Set it for 26-27 psi and you should be gtg.

My bad....I ment the EBPV. My one truck I can hear the difference then the other. So it still could be working? Is it neede here in our weather? So the EBPV is just used to help with warm up? Also is it good to use it as exhaust brake? I thought I read some where it was bad on something in the engine, but I could be wrong.
Since you mentioned about the wastgate, what is the manual boost master is it like the turbomaster? So stock is best w/stock turbo....how about with upgraded turbo?

Re: Wastegate

I think he meant turbo master.

The exhaust brake wether you use your ebpv or a pacbrake causes backpressure on the valves opening them up when they're not supposed to resulting in piston slap. I don't know 100% but that is what I have read. I have a bd exhaust brake on my e99 and its pretty nice but I'm not using it to its full potential. I have it turned down to like 20# IIRC. I have stock valve springs so I'm going to leave it that way till I can get some 910's.

Stock turbo sucks even in stock form. Better turbo is kinda like better hpop. It works stock but not as well. Take that for what its worth.

Re: Wastegate

Right I am talking about the the acutator that contorl whent he wastegate opens and closes. It also you to get all the benefits of a sealed waste gate which you do not get with the stock vacuum setup but will also open at a pre set level of your choice which you do not get with wiring the WG shut. This will get you allthe power your turbo has to offer plus still prevents it from over spinning and ruining the turbo. Its for those that plan to keep the stock turbos and not upgrade.
