Anyone seen this?

Got a hold of a truck that wouldn't run, the owner said it burned up 3 IDM's on the 3rd one it ran great for a week then crapped the turbo, the guy bought a new turbo and put it on. (I honestly don't thing there was an issue with the IDM[s])

After he got the turbo on he couldn't get it to start or run except on ether Anywho it would up with me and I did my usually check of 'crank, no start' on a 7.3L PSD. Finally found that #5 injector hold down bolt had broken and unseated the injector and all the HPO was excaping there.

After all the HG's, PMR's, and even Forged rods; Its somewhat puzzeling to me that it would break an inj hold down bolt before it overcame one of them.

Re: Anyone seen this?

MP, I think the hold down bolt breaking was a cause, and the no-start was the effect. That would make sense why the rods and hg's would be fine.

Re: Anyone seen this?

That might have been the result of running it on ether, you think a little timing can make too much CP - try running an engine on ether. Just starting one on ether is hard on it.

Might have been the result of over TQing on install too tho.

Re: Anyone seen this?

the truck he is working on supposedly never had the valve cover off on that side. He found one of the injectors had a poppet hung open, but that still doesnt explain the hold down bolt. I agree with you guys a little too much timing in a can...

Re: Anyone seen this?

IDK, just thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone else had one break a hold down bolt.

Supposedly there were 3 injectors replaced on the driver's side of the engine, the broken holddown bolt was on the passenger side. And all the injectors look to have been NEVER touched from what I can tell, but then again I don't know who put them in or where they came from if they were changed.

Like I said between the number of head gaskets and rods that have failed to excessive CP's I would have thought this case to do one of them before breaking a holddown bolt and unseating an injector.

Re: Anyone seen this?

Ether cause a spike in CP, so sudden the gaskets may live through it as they'll give some.

I've seen some pretty crazy stuff happen with ether. It should be used SPARINGLY, if at all, as it's very hard on stuff. You can shorten rods with it easy too.
