Forged or Billet ?

Well getting into the build up soon, and in the back of my mind, I keep thinking I am gonna spend big money on machining this block......

And I think what if the stock forged rods dont hold.........

Realistically Id like to see 500ish HP giver take.............However that being said I want to have this thing back together by august........

A 3000$ set of rods would make that hard......

Where is the 1200 medium between these two

Like I said, I really wanna build the chit outa the bottem end, because I dont wanna go through this crap again.......That being said, does a 500HP truck justify using 3000$ rods ?

Im lost

Re: Forged or Billet ?

Thats a hard call. I am planning my engine build this year too. I plan to run the injectors and turbo I currently have, and I think I'm going to go with forged rods, girdle and head studs....

I dont plan NOS or anything like that ever, and I dont sled pull.....

If you stay at or under the 500hp mark the factory forged rods should do just fine. I'd mag them, and if you are so inclined polish and shot-peen them first. At the VERY least have them mag'd and inspected by someone who really knows his stuff. If you have an inexpensive source having them X-rayed would be killer.

Re: Forged or Billet ?

See the thing is, I know if I go billet, it wont stop...........first 500, then it will be 650 then twins on a huge shot of NOS........20000 later.......At least with Forged rods I wont go over 500ish HP......
The thing is I dont wanna spend tons of money on machining and parts and labour because 500 is still tough on forged rods.

Like I said........DI, BWD PDR where are the 1200$ option

The hypermax that BWD are so far the cheapest option at 2500$............Whats your guys opinion if I was looking for a set of used billet rods ?

Re: Forged or Billet ?

Well if you have any kind of source for machine shop work it won't cost much. You can polish the rods yourself. The last set I did cost 30 bucks in abrasive. Think it cost me another 300 to mag 'em, peen them and install new bushings.

If you want to NEVER think twice about it EVER again and be ready for more HP in the future just get a set of Crowers and be done with it.

Re: Forged or Billet ?

By the time you prep some stockers, they are still stock forged rods. We used to prep them, then cryo, but they still wont take the abuse of a billet rod. Will they last at 500 rwhp? Sure, let us know how long.

Do it once, do it right. There are no $1200 rods. If you are shortcutting the most important part of the build, then rethink your goals.
