V-Bands Leaking

Well finally got around to checking for boost leaks and just about every v-band connection is leaking.All seem to be clean and tight.


Anyone run into this?

Is there a cure?

Are you running o-rings in your connections? If you are, then maybe going to the next size larger cord diameter would help.

You could try a couple different fixes:

1.) New O-Rings for the flanges.

2.) Some high quality RTV in place of the o-rings.

3.) RTV in addition to the existing o-rings.

2000 F250 7.3L 4x4
2003 F250 7.3L 4x4

There are only 2 connections with the o-rings (turbo outlets), the rest there are none.

I had considered RTV, but didn't think that would be enough to hold 65+ back.

Might just give that a shot.

On the flanges without o-rings, do they interlock (have separate male and female flanges)?

You could also try sliding a thin o-ring over the male end of the flange.

FWIW, most of the guys I see at the track are all using rtv in their v-bands.

Or you can measure them and get them from any packing and sealing supplier. If you need help sizing them up to determine what o-ring they actually are let me know.

On the ones without o-rings - I assume they interlock with a flange - I have run small diameter o-ring cord in there to help seal them up when there is some misalignment. Just as long as you can get the v-band back on to clamp the connection point down. Bottom line is though, you have some misalignment - perhaps everything needs to be loosened and then everything snugged back up before tightening everything back down. It could also be flex/warping due to use.

RTV does hold a lot of boost.... I've put in on IC boots before when I was having some holding issues - not recommended, but it has been done. One of the joints on my Dmax is RTV'd due to sealing issues.

When I assemble everything the V-bands are the first thing that is tightened up, and the boot on the other end is second, so not sure why they they are still leaking.

The cold side pipe has two v-bands that clamp right to the intake manifolds, this is a very tricky connection to make because of the limited clearances, so RTV is about the only thing I can use there. But for the rest an o-ring sounds like a pretty good idea.
