My dilema

Hey guys, I am in the hunt for my next Powerstroke but I have a bit of a dilemma. The truck will be used around my small farm, hauling dirt, wood, trash, stuff like that. Occasionally it will pull a trailer. I would say 10k max but lets say 15k to be safe, but that is MAYBE five times a year. This will also go in the woods with me hunting and do some four wheeling. This truck will NEVER see drags or sled pulling. I am more interested in reliable and works.

What I am looking for is a reg cab, manual, 4x4. I am looking at either a 99-02 7.3 or an 05-07 6.0. Either truck is going to get a mild lift. Icon 3" spring hangers and 5" rear leaves for the 7.3 or 2.5" coils and 5" leaves for a 6.0. Both are going to get cut out fenders and 38-40" tires. Both would get lockers and likely a regear to 4.30.

As for mods, gauges, exhaust, air dog, fluidampr, studs if necessary, stage 1 injectors, live dyno tuning. Kind of the basics to improve the power but nothing crazy. If its a 7.3 a 38r would be in order likely with a set of headers and new up pipes. If its a 6.0 elite 155 injectors and a GoGo stage 1 manifold.

One of my concerns is, as I see it, gamble on the 6.0? but it is easier to make power with a 6.0 and the suspension is improved as it turning with such large tires. The 7.3 is known for its reliability, but the other concern is it has leaf springs up front and big tires like to rub leaf springs. Plus the 7.3 has a D50 in the front and the outers will not like that much weight.

Honestly I wouldn't rule out a 6.4 if I could find one for cheap. I will most likely be getting the truck out of an auto auction so I am in no real hurry, I just want to be satisfied with my decision.

If you have any input, have been in a similar situation, have experience with the issues I have stated or have though of one that alludes me, post up.

thanks
micky

Re: My dilema

Don't hold me to it, but I'm pretty sure my '02 has a 60 up front, not a 50...I believe they changed in '01 or '02.

Re: My dilema

It sounds to me that you are wanting to overbuild for what you want. A chipped 7.3 or a studed EGR deleted 6.0 with a SCT will do every thing you want. If you are gonna spend that kinda cash any way just get a 6.4 with some tunes.

At the right moment that could be a good thing, right?

I wouldn't put a lot of money in a truck for the farm & hunting. A chipped 7.3 should fit your needs.

Re: My dilema

I agree with that. But 38s on those little shafts is bound to break. Defiantly with a set of lockers. I will drive this on the street also. It will not be a DD, but I will use the hell out of it.

Re: My dilema

As to the d50 outer concerns, the d50 has 60 outers and basically d44 differential. So the outers are still the same as the d60 on the newer ones. They both have the crappy plastic in the hub units so both will eventually fail unless you go to a dynatrac sytem and convert to the old style d60 front. As to the 6leaker,Its a crap shoot like you said but they make power a little easier.takes stage 2's with good tuning and bigger turbo to hang with them and some hybrids to beat them.I really think you would be happy with the 7.3 though and since reliability is a concern that would seal the deal for me.

Re: My dilema

7.3 should be cheaper, and is a solid platform.
i'd go w a 1999~00 , since it is manual clutches are cheaper to beef up vs a built tranny, but..id go with stg1 or 2 injectors diy, instaead of headers though.

Re: My dilema

That's the way I have been leaning but I wanted to make sure I wasn't talking myself into or out of a truck for one reason or another. It looks like the one I was wanting might have sold. It was in Washington anyway and I'm in Ohio. I don't see the wife being thrilled watching 2 little girls by herself for 4 days while I fly to the far side of Seattle and drive home.

Re: My dilema

A 7.3 will get stage 1's, 38r or D66 if its an e99, and live tuning. All the mods won't be at once, but the fuel, gauges, dampr, in n out would happen immediately.
