whether to tap for EGT or pull off uptube and drill

Got my EGT sensor yesterday and called my buddy who's a diesel mechanic to have him tap for it. He told me that he could do that, but with my truck being an 02 he said he'd really rather take off the uptube for the turbo and drill itn then seal it from both sides since my pipings not brand new and the threads my not take. He wants 100 plus 20 per broken bolt if they break. Should I just tell him to tap it or pay the extra money to do it his way. Any input or opinions would help

I would put the probe in the driver side exhaust manifold. It is cast iron. It is so easy, even a caveman coould do it.

You dont need to pull anything off. Just like Arisley said, use the driver side exhaust manifold. Drill it, tap it, and screw in the probe. Its easy...

Mine is in the manifold now, but when I had stock up-pipes I had it in the up-pipe. I just drilled the hole and welded in the bung that came with my gauge, and it worked pretty nicely. Easy drilling and good threads.

Drill and tap from the bottom of the truck on the rear of the driver's side manifold. Don't worry about taking anything apart.

Thanks guys, tapped it today and skipped pulling anything off, Seems to work great, now to spend hours comparing my EGT temps to others on this site. Thanks guys, saved me some cash and stress.

Good job. It's really the easiest part of the install. Did you set the depth of the probe to center it in the manifold?
