Looking to get some of my milage back?

With the tax return coming in I figure I have some cash to give the truck some love. I have a 2000 Excursion 4x4 with 300k on it its got an intake, exhaust, Dp f5, and a John Woods tranny with the 6.4 convertor. I know the 285's aren't the greatest for the milage but it seems like a good compromise.

Basically my milage has been steadily dropping over the last few years, I know that the ulsd play a part and being in the northeast and the cold weather fuel hurts. But I have seen my milage go from 16-17 hand calculated to like 11-12mpg. When I am towing 5k around on the highway it doesn't matter if I am doing 65 or 75, it holds steady at 9-10.

I have gone through the brakes and I can't find any calipers dragging, wheel bearings are as good as they can be.

I do throw a CEL on long hills and full throttle pulls but have yet to scan it or test pressures. I plan on doing that in the next few weeks. My guess is that my HPOP is getting weak and as a result my milage has dropped. Does this sound right?

So I guess my question comes down to if I can only afford to swap one component do I by a adreneline pump and run the stock split shots or do I find a used set of single shots and keep the stock pump?

Sorry for the long post,

Geoff

Well that is a big drop esp for 285s..what does your firewall look like behind the turbo.
What do the boots look like up pipes etc..could be a boost leak.

The adrenaline costs less then injectors..and works even on stockers. Id go that route before sticks.

But first thing is 1st see what that code is.

Up pipes are fine, also no boost leaks. I was thinking of the single shots because they use less oil right?

How many miles on the truck....
33% reduction is a lot..not sure how to test injectors for being ragged out. But a possibility.
Dead hpop as well . Id talk to bob at dieselsite he can and will tell you how to test your hpop.
Maybe give rosewood or your chosen inj guy a call

..btw I get at least 17 mpg when I am nice to my truck and it is on 285s
And that is on a 15' hpop and orig 150+k injs.

You can also check your ebpv tube coming off the header see if it is clogged but not sure if you would loose 5mpg..id think 1 or 2 but worth a look.
All filters changed or cleaned..ie fuel. Etc....
Egts still ok

Just ruling out things.

Re: Looking to get some of my milage back?

Egt's are about the same maybe 100 degrees higher, all the filters/oil are fresh. The Sensor on the exhaust tube has a bypass/fake sensor on it that Diesel Innovations made up when they were originally working on the truck when it was in Houston. I have tried with and without this bypass and milage really does not change.

The truck has 300k on what I believe to be OE injectors/Oil system so I am thinking stuff has just started to wear out.

Get your injectors flow tested. 300k is quite a bit, id be willin to bet one or several are worn out.
