Runnig single alternator

For anyone running a single alternator, I ran across this article and wondered what you thought? So if the stock alternator is 110 amp how much alternator does a guy really need if he is not running a snow plow and a bunch of wild power eaters?

Re: Runnig single alternator

I have read that before also but while not offered it is quite available from places like NAPA Car Quest etc.

Here is what was posted somewhere else and I found the same thing checking it:
Quote:
Had to replace the alternator tonight after a little research yesterday prior to ordering it I learned a few things.

First the G2 series alternator that comes on apparently all Xs is prone to problems this is a well posted subject.

Second the only alternator listed for an X at Napa, AA and AZ is the 110 amp G2

If you look under the F-350 there are a lot more options including a G3 140 amp for about $60 LESS!

It is a direct bolt in as the same 110 amp for the X was also listed for the F-350
Just got done putting it in and it was like putting the same one back in.

NOW for a bit of info I did not expect.

There was an alternator wiring change on 11/4/04
This was well listed for the trucks but NOT for the X

The older connection came kind of out of the top of the alternator
With the newer version they come out the side toward the center of the engine.

So knowing that my X was built in March of 05 what style did I need?
All the parts stores listed ONLY the old style for the 05 X and it would NOT have been the same hook up!

I ordered a G3 140 amp for a F-350 2005 built after 11/04/04 and it bolted and plugged right in!

So if you have a late model 05 look at the back of alternator and check the connection clocking.
As far as needing it I am one of those that woudl rather alwasy have more and not need it than to end up being in a situation I did not foresee and be lacking. Heck I wil likely end up with a 250. But I do also plan on running rather large inverters for AC power inside and outside access.

Re: Runnig single alternator

I went with a 200a 6G large case alternator when I upgraded. It's not quite a direct fit. A small amount of grinding was required to get it to sit in the factory bracket.
