What Do You Think This Is?

Got a buddy with an '02 F350 auto 4x4 cc short-bed. Truck has a DI chip, head studs, hi-torque injectors, intake, exhaust (stock turbo).

Truck had been running great. He was driving about 25mph thru a school zone the other day when all of a sudden it started bellowing out a bunch of white smoke.

Now when you try and crank it, at first it makes like a loud "clank" type noise, but if you crank it a couple more times it'll start but run a little rough and keep bellowing smoke. It also has either oil or fuel coming out of the exhaust. I'm assuming it's oil because there's almost no oil in the crank-case now, although the oil coming out of the exhaust has more of a thinner diesel feel.

Any ideas?

Re: What Do You Think This Is?

maybe an injector poped loose and is leaking oil into the cylinder. Maybe the "clank" is one or more cylinders have oil in them. I would start by pulling the valve covers and make sure the injectors are all seated.

Re: What Do You Think This Is?

I'm thinking it might have broken an injector hold down bolt and the injector is not seated all the way.

does the smoke smell like raw fuel? if so then its probably a cracked injector nozzle

That's what I'm leaning towards, but the oil on the ground doesn't have a very strong smell of fuel. But then again I'm kind of congested right now.

Re: What Do You Think This Is?

Sounds like it's having a hydrolock initially. I would do as the others have said.

Re: What Do You Think This Is?

injectors not installed properly...

basically the injectors weren't seated ALLLLLL the way down into the cyl bores...and/or bolted down securely.

The truck was probably good for a few days/weeks (dep. upon how tight/loosely they were installed)...until the combustion leaked up past the (uncrushed) copper washer...& burned the injector o-rings allowing the fuel (pump) pressure...to go straight into the cylinder...hydro-locking the cylinder.

*it could be a cracked nozzle...but cracked 7.3 nozzles are RAAAARRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEE

pull VC's, lay a straight edge across the 4 injs to see which one(s) is high
