Is my new GTP38R too loose?

Just picked up my new turbo but it seems a little loose radially on the shaft, you can grab it at both ends and it seems a bit loose??? Theres no in and out play, just up and down. I know the bearings will take up some oil but it seems excessive any thoughts?

the 38r's will seem pretty loose. as long as its not hitting the housings it sounds pretty typical.

The 38r I dealt with was just the same.

Re: Is my new GTP38R too loose?

I feared the same when i bought mine used. It had more play than my stock bushing turbo. It didn't touch the housing anywhere and the play went away when I got some oil in it. Works perfectly fine.

Re: Is my new GTP38R too loose?

up and down play is ok, as long as it can't hit the housing.

when the center section is pressurized with oil...the shaft is centered on the bearings.

in & out play (more than a few thou) is a different story...

Re: Is my new GTP38R too loose?

They use Hydro-Dynamic bearings like Holset. Axial and radial play is OK. Just like stated, the pressurized oil causes the shaft to center. Most oil clearances between bearing/shaft surfaces are anywhere from 1-3 Thousandths. As long as the wheels are not hitting the housing, most likely the turbo is in spec. If you use a dial indicator, Garrett should be able to supply the service limits and you can verify if you are really worried.

Ok thanks guys, I will measure the up and down + in and out tommoro at work I dont have my dial here at home. Its funny that more and more parts are starting to come together (on my shelf) that I am getting more worried about all that could go wrong

Re: Is my new GTP38R too loose?

That's usually how it goes. You probably get the same feeling I get when it's done and ready to start. "Did I forget anything" "Is everything installed" "Do I have all my tools" " Is this part going to work since i got it used".

Good luck with it.
