EGT's on a 02 7.3

I know this has been discussed so many times but after reading a few threads I am getting more confused. I can't exactly tell you if the turbo is stock, but I know it has a AFE intake, Edge CS programmer. From reading threads I also think I have stage 1 injectors as I can get 20lb boost. What I need to know is when towing a 9Klb trailer I can easily get the EGT's to 1200 and more if I push it. Is that normal? I try to keep it below 1100 but doing a hill at 40mph kind of sucks, lol. I have 140K miles on it and it runs good, automatic tranny as well. If I get stuck behind a big rig I have to shift down to first and do 30 to pass him.

Thoughts or questions? I need to know what to do about getting my EGTs down so I can pull uphill at 55-60 lol

Re: EGT's on a 02 7.3

You can run 1250 all day long with no worries. You most likely don't have stage 1 injectors. The edge can't tune for them. 20 psi is pretty easy to get to on a tuned truck. What power level do you tow on? I would recommend the lowest setting or stock. To help keep egts down keep the rpms in the 2200-2700 range.

A few upgrades to help egts is a better flowing exhaust, ebpv delete and a billet wheel.

Also the edge tuning is know for being hard on transmissions. You may want to upgrade to a ts6 chip or the hydra. Also to keep the teams happy install a 6.0 trans cooler.

The turbo is designed to take that kind of heat. Your pistons will melt before your turbo does. You had other problems.

Re: EGT's on a 02 7.3

Thanks guys, I forgot to mention, I do have the 6.0 tranny cooler, best money I ever spent lol. What comes stock as far as turbo on these trucks? I just looked and it does say Garret on the tube. Sbluke55, I have heard many horror stories and seen a couple turbos go because of heat, so I am not sure thats a valid statement. That's why I am so paranoid to go higher EGT's.

I do tow on the tow setting and when I hit 50mph on the hills I go down to second to keep the rpms up.

Re: EGT's on a 02 7.3

ive hit 17 and 1800 degrees multiple times with my stock turbo.. i could make over 20 psi when my truck had stock injectors and no chip, so i doubt you have anything other than factory injectors. ive had my stock turbo at 36-37 psi a few times.. i know it wont last, but its still going. i think youre going to be fine, just get rid of the edge tuning, its known to be pretty hard on transmissions.

Re: EGT's on a 02 7.3

I have read on what you said about the Edge tuner, and from what I can find is that was a long time ago before the Evolution came out. I have the Edge Evolution CS so it doesn't seem to be relevant anymore.

I did find out that I have a stock turbo and stock DP and 5" exhaust. I think sometime next year I will upgrade to the GTP38R turbo and a 4" DP. As far as the EBPV delete, I would like to keep it as some winter months it gets down right cold and I like using it as a engine brake on some hills when towing my toy hauler. I need to lookup the EGTs on the GTP38r turbo and see if it will at least let me go fast at the same level of EGTs I am now.

Re: EGT's on a 02 7.3

When it comes to the edge products my understanding of why they are not great for our trucks is the lack of transmission adjustment (as in there is none) so you have more power and torque going thru stock trans tuning. So if you have a modified valve body and a shift kit or a manual then the edge is a perfectly fine product.
