Tune H.P. question

Just recieved my Oct. Diesel World and I read the article about the TS 6 pos chip and the dyno results.
How are the HP ratings determined?
For example, on the 140 HP setting the truck made 74 hp more than stock. Why is it a 140 HP setting?
Is this a set standard or do the tuners decide what to label the settings?
On the 6.4 tunes are the numbers accurate?

Re: Tune H.P. question

the truck did not have the supporting mods like a fuel system, turbo or injectors to get the full benefit of the 140 tune in fact it probally made more power on one of the lower settings

You are correct, the truck made as much horsepower on the 50 HP setting as on the 140 HP setting.

So tune HP ratings are potential output over stock?

Are all of the stock injectored guys running tunes >100 HP just wasting there money?

Re: Tune H.P. question

It is 140 HP up where there is a factory fuel limit above 3200 RPMs....

If you look at power output somewhere around 3300 or so you can see where the factory fuel cut starts kicking in. If you compare power up there then you might have another 100 or so.

Re: Tune H.P. question

Here's what Matt is talking about. The factory cuts fuel at around 3200 RPM. A lot of aftermarket programming ("custom" or not) will extend the rev limit by a couple hundred RPM.

Re: Tune H.P. question

Basically, you get 140 when you rev the engine above the rev limiter because at that rpm you typically won't get more than a few hp .
as far as i'm concerned, a "140" tune is an arbitrary number. an intake/exhaust/tune AD injector truck will typically do 280-300.
toss on an oil system, fuel system, and a better turbo... maybe you'll have 320-330. maybe.
On the 6.4 however, the numbers are pretty close... like 597 fuel only on a tune and few other (small) mods. that's pretty close to the advertised 300 over stock.
