Re: Brute66

I was looking at similar setup to you. I was told by some very experienced people that the Brute 66 would not even get close to that hp mark. Maybe 400hp max.

Now I want to make it clear that I have NO experience with the Brute 66, but I started down that road and quickly realized that I would not achieve the same goal that you are hoping for. I believe the 38r would be a better option, however I have chosen to go the T4 route. Check out iratediesel.com and click on the 500hp combinations. They lay it all out for you.

Re: Brute66

I was looking into the brute I found lots of mixed emotions on it..
Nltd says it will clean up 238/100 pretty decent and have great spool up but I never really found anyone running it to put there input in.
I'm looking at either a t4 s366 or the brute
Everyone has me leaning towards the t4 tho.
I'm interested to see what others with the brute have to day about it.

Re: Brute66

I ran a D66 with 238/100's for a year.
I'd say it was right around 500 hp on the butt dyno, but who knows.
It made a great daily driver, and I was careful on the silly tunes, but I wouldn't say I was gentle on it overall.

I didn't expect the turbo to last, so I swapped it out for a T4, but to my surprise the turbo was in great shape. I'm putting a wicked wheel in it, a 360* thrust washer, and tossing it into my other obs with the same 238/100's although I plan to have a tuner pull back the fuel some on the higher hp tunes. It would back out the sun as long as I held the pedal to the floor, so it was a good deterrent to stay out of the throttle on the highest tune.

I can't promise it will hold together, but I've had good luck.

I've talked to dyno proven and their confidant in the brute making a great charger for what I'm looking for but like you said I can't find more than one person happy with it.. IVe got the same thread going on on PSA and its tuned into BASB talk and that charger looks like it may be what I'm going with

Re: Brute66

My D66 spooled slower than stock with the stock obs injectors, as I suspected it would. I installed it before the injectors just to see how it ran.

I immediately installed the 238/100 injectors along with head studs, pushrods, and 910 valve springs. Running beans tunes, it spooled great in all of the tunes above stock power levels. I ran it on a tow tune every day, egt's were 50-100* cooler than stock in that tune which I ran 99% of the time.
In the hottest tune, egt's could jump to 1500* in a hurry, but would light the turbo instantly, and roast the tires until I shifted (5 speed)

With good tuning, and not driving like an idiot, I know it can survive. I'd say my tow tune ran in the 350hp area, and next to no smoke, which was perfect for daily driving. I think I'll be shooting for a smoke free 400-450hp, without studs, springs or pushrods in my other obs. I'll continue to run it at a lower hp, with the odd sneaky stoplight destruction of a new duramax here and there.

Re: Brute66

See I'm wonder what a real turbo will do for me since I'm still rocking the stock one.
I dont know how it has not went boom yet at 40-55+ psi but its still like brand new I don't understand.
I bet the difference will be a lot.

Re: Brute66

Well I've upgraded from the D66 to an S468, and yes it makes more power. It's a little slower to spool, but I'm putting bigger injectors in it anyway. It's streetable, but honestly the D66 was more street friendly. Something a touch smaller or perhaps a tighter housing would have been a better choice for a plain old work or street truck, but this truck is more of a toy/hot rod to me.

If you don't plan on bigger than 238's a BASB turbo, or a S366 or something similar might be a better choice than an S468. (Not that it's bad, it's just a tight fit, and aimed more at 500+ hp in a 7.3.
