turbo upgrade

ive been reading all afternoon, and i know this topic has been beat to death. but.....for all us "normal" folk who dont have engineering degrees and endless hours researching these topics, can someone point me in the right direction??? i want the next step to my puzzle, i want to upgrade the turbo on my 01 excursion. it has an edge programmer, 4" exhaust, billet convertor and thats it. i use it primarily for heading to the cottage each weekend and it usually works its ass off, running it at 135-140 kph and usually towing a trailer too!!! best truck i have ever owned.
so......what are a few choices, and keep in mind i am mechanically capable of doing the work myself

would you:
1. change the tuner? custom tuner? dp??
2. big injectors??
3. big turbo?? i have access to a 02 7.s in a van chassis for a core
4. turbo inlet pipes???

any info appreciated.

thanks in advance

Re: turbo upgrade

The 38r turbo is an easy drop-in upgrade. It will drop your EGTs with stock injectors and allow you to make 450+ horsepower with bigger injectors. That would be my first upgrade, then see where you EGTs are towing and then start adding fuel.

For air intakes..... My personal preference for something that doesn't try to win at the drag strip the paper filter made by Wix for the 02-03 trucks (with the 3 inch pleats has plenty of airflow for 400 HP.

My experience was that the stock air box didn't seal very good, and I had all kinds of dust in the intake.

Were you using the filter with the double foam seal?

Re: turbo upgrade

i would drop the edge and get tunes from matt at gearhead automotive first. then look into a diffrent turbo, custome tunes will do wonders by themselves.

BTS Transmission installed/tuned by TSD
Autometer Ultralite II Trans,Pyro,Boost.
MBRP 4'' Cool Duals turboback with 5'' tips.
DIY tractionbars with Procomp mounts.
6637/zoodad intake,Drilled/slotted Rotors.

The van turbo simply gives more exhaust flow. It is a slight power upgrade, but IMO the 38r performs great with stock injectors all the way up to stage 3 hybrids. My advice is never buy something that you have to re-do when you want more power.

Re: turbo upgrade

I just upgraded to a van turbo. I think its great so far, I don't plan on huge amounts of hp down the road though. My hp goal is 350-400.
