Exclamation 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

Hey guys, I'm a proud new diesel owner. Grew up my whole life fixing motorcycles and gas trucks. I am pretty handy under a hood. But my obsession has switched to diesels. I have been rodding out Harley's and chevy and ford gas motors for a while as a hobby. So now a new project:
-1995 single cab, long bed 7.3L Powerstroke with a 5 speed manual. All stock except Currently has:
-new trans
-state inspection ready (no leaks, dtc, etc)
-4" lift with 35x12.5x17 tires
-turbo back exhaust
-Dana 60s
What I want:
-any and all help for what performance parts to buy and install for about 2-3k price range that can mostly be done out of my garage. I have a basic diesel understanding i.e (glow plugs = spark plugs, inter cooler = radiator, injectors easier to upgrade, ICP = MAS)
-break it down Barney style, I'm thick skinned and ready to learn.

Thanks guys!

Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

Intercooler I guess you could consider a radiator for air lol. The single biggest thing you could do to wake it up right now as it sits is chip with tunes, I recommend a Hydra from PHP or Gearhead. Next would be to upgrade your HPOP, High Pressure Oil Pump. The 95 has a 15* style pump and going up to the 17* would help it. Even fairly stock engines see gains with upgraded oil pumps. Next, I would convert over to an electric fuel system with regulated return. No reason you couldn't do all that for around 2 grand. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

I would recommend reading other peoples builds, perhaps figuring out what you wanna use the truck for and what kind of power youre trying to achieve. Your biggest friend here is reading and taking in as much as you can.

with that said, you already have an exhaust it sounds like? a good intake and a good set of tunes will really wake the truck up. I also would recommend a hydra. Your truck also does not have an intercooler, so that would be a good upgrade for you

Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

you cant just put a 17* pump on a 95..you need to swap the front cover or buy a moded pump with the Anti-drainback feature
you should post your questions in the 94-97 forums..quite a few differences from OBS to SD..

Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

Sorry for not being specific on the pump, just stated to upgrade it. I guess some people would just swap them though since it was a 17*. I must have been thinking and not typed to check out Terminator Engineering, his T-500 would be a good upgraded pump.

Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

Glow plugs do not equal spark plugs and an intercooler does not equal the radiator and ICP sure as hell doesn't equal ICP. For that budget I'd start with efuel, intercooler and tranny mods

Gauges, injectors, and tunes are a good place to start.
Need to figure out your long-term plans for the truck before you decide on a set of injectors.

Exclamation Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

Thanks guys! I've been doing research on everything you guys are putting out. Most common question is what I'll be using the truck for... I've been finding myself towing my racecar and restorations to competitions, which led me to a diesel, but also will use the truck as a daily driver. But as with any restoration, I also want to make it go fast. :) that's why I was leaning towards a gauge pod and a HUD programmer to be able to switch between settings to maximize my upgrades. But everything I've found is that a custom tune would be better than a chip of any sort. So that leads me to wonder if a turbo, injectors, hpop with a custom tune would be a good start. If you got anything used, let me know. Thanks for the help!

Re: 1995 F-350 7.3 Questions

Custom tunes on a chip would be best hands down. Get some gauges and a Hydra chip. It will allow you to change tunes on the fly. Go to efuel before up sizing the injectors. As stated above, you need to set a hp goal and that will help you with what you need. Also as bruce said, the trans is a week point in these trucks when adding power so don't leave it out.

It's a 5 speed manual. No tranny mods to be had other than putting a single mass flywheel with a better clutch.
