bizarro cooling system

New water pump and thermostat about three months ago.....yesterday on the way home driving about 45 mph for 20 miles the gauge ran extremely low, barely making it to the beginning of the normal range, where it usually runs about the "R". I had heat working, the degas bottle is about half full, but the engine compartment smells like coolant and the upper radiator hose seems to be empty. Perhaps a failed thermostat? any ideas. It was about 60 in Boise yesterday so it wasn't weather related.

Re: bizarro cooling system

i've had an off-brand thermostat fail open before. i hear of that rather often on smaller engines at least.
