Converter randomly not locking?

Well today i was doing a quick WOT pull (1st-3rd) and then immediately got on the highway. The converter did not lock for some reason. It is a new PI stallion with a fresh (built) transmission. It eventually locked up a few miles down the road. Fluid temp was around 105*F when this occured. It acted as though the fluid was not yet warm enough for it to lock up. FWIW it was about 10*F or colder outside when this happened. This was also the first and only time it has done this.

Afterward driving around town it seemed to lock up with the normal firmness. This whole setup has about 500 miles on it.

Fluke or something i should be concerned about?

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

Mine does that alot, but the temps are normally -20 to -40. Works fine when both engine and tranny are warmed up.

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

my converter usually locks when the fluid temp 50* though. That is the only descrepancy from usual operation. The fluid temp only increased a few degrees until it locked this particular time.

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

Put in a switch to lock it manually and see what happens.

No.

I'll consider the switch, but i'd rather not, especially in this cold.

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

Scott will tell you that the TC lock switch will do more harm than good. That's what he told me when he built my tranny, haven't used it since I left his shop.

I'd call him and see what he has to say.

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

I think if the pcm was telling the tc to lock and it wouldn't, you would get the light on the shifter flashing.

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

the converter is not from him though, its from David at DI.

I'm not sure what he can do, since its not really a transmission issue per say. The trans itself is doing great. This is the only hiccup the whole setup has had so far.

I'll check codes again on my scangauge, but i did not notice any O/D light flashing. If it did flash, there should be something in history or current i would think.

Also, why would it lock up fine afterward and only this once not lock up? If it was a real problem i would think it would do it all the time..

Re: Converter randomly not locking?

Some trucks wont go to lock up until the engine and trans warm up and hit a certain temp.
