Am I off my rocker?

OK so I purchased a 38r backing plate and wheel off a member and received it today. With about 2 minutes with the pencil grinder I've got it mounted on a 38 center section with the factory 38r housing on it.
This was not suppose to work. But its sitting here together. I'm inches away from throwing it on the truck and trying it.
Have I missed something? Am I crazy?

Re: Am I off my rocker?

is there anyway to bench test it first with say something like a boost leak detector? just throwing ideas out there so you dont get it on and find out somethings screwed up and have to take it off again.

Re: Am I off my rocker?

I think it should be good. The backplate on the side that connects to the center section is identical to the stock one except for the small notch for the thrust bearing washer I had to make.
Is it worth trying? Basically its an SD66 now isn't it?

Re: Am I off my rocker?

I would say it is definitely worth trying! cause if it works then this is something new that us 7.3 guys could look into.

Re: Am I off my rocker?

I don't think its new.. ive heard about doing this and it has been done. theres a company that sells the "custom" 38r backing plate already to go to bolt onto a stock gtp38 center section. they use the 38r housing if im not mistaken with a 38r comp. wheel. what im not sure of is if they use the same turbine whell as the stock 38 or if its different for the 38r? also most 38rs use the 1.0 housing.

Re: Am I off my rocker?

What company sells them? Thats actually why I picked up this backplate. Was going to use it for specs to machine my own custom one.
The 38 and 38r use the same turbine wheel/shaft along with exhaust housings.

Edit: shaft may be different for the roller bearings.

Re: Am I off my rocker?

OK something I'm kinda worried about. If I run this I plan on using it on a van turbo which is ungated of course. In the daily driver/ tow tune from matt I just pulled 30 pounds of boost at 3/4 throttle. How much higher boost am I gonna get with the 38r wheel?

Re: Am I off my rocker?

Shat. Wonder how long I can make a journal bearing turbo last with a 360 thrust bearing at that pressure. Guess there's one way to find out. Lol.
Am gonna take the back plate to an aquaintence of mine with CNC capabilities and see if he can copy it for a reasonable price before I install it.
